Sharpton had been invited to speak by the Black Student Union.
University officials today refused to comment on the cancellation to LSN, though, earlier this morning, they had confirmed Sharpton had cancelled his visit out of "fear" of "white supremacists".
The Belleville News-Democrat today confirmed that the speech had been cancelled. They claim that Sharpton "never really confirmed it" and did not specify any particular reason for the cancellation.
Well, that is not what the Belleville News Democrat said on January 16. Then they reported that Sharpton was "scheduled to speak at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Jan. 27" and that the speech would begin at 7pm.
Their source was Tairisha Sawyer, vice president of events for SIUE's Black Student Union.
