Search - CSO Directories

11 dir.lut.ac.uk/cso-all.html
Search CSO - CSO phone books are a common type of directory service. CSO stands for Computer Services Office, which is the department at the University of Illinois that originally developed the CSO database software. Because CSO runs in conjunction with Gopher servers, you can perform searches from within a World Wide Web browser. A good listing and contact point can be found here. You can use these directories if you know someone's institutional affiliation and you want to find an e-mail address or even a phone number or postal address.

14 web500gw.itd.umich.edu:8888/M
X.500 Services - X.500 is a distributed and hierachical database: distributed because a site on the Internet runs its own X.500 database; hierarchical because a site is a part of a larger tree structure. for example, the University of Michigan is part of Michigan organizations, which are part of USA organizations, which are part of worldwide organizations.
However, the University of Michigan runs a worldwide Web-to-Web gateway that allows you to browse all registered X.500 servers in the world.

45 www.webworkshop.net/
- You have the right idea, but it's not exponential (exponential means to double over a set period of time etc...). I found this page very helpful when I was first learning SEO. http://www.webworkshop.net/pagerank.html Best PR theory to date is it's on a logarithmic scale, From the page above- "Let's assume that it is a logarithmic, base 10 scale, and that it takes 10 properly linked new pages to move a site's important page up 1 toolbar point. It will take 100 new pages to move it up another point, 1000 new pages to move it up one more, 10,000 to the next, and so on. That's why moving up at the lower end is much easier that at the higher end. In reality, the base is unlikely to be 10. Some people think it is around the 5 or 6 mark, and maybe even less. Even so, it still gets progressively harder to move up a toolbar point at the higher end of the scale." I've seen the log scale quoted between 4 and 8 from those who have a clue. We don't need to know the actual base since it makes little difference, you still need more links to go up one PR point. So I can visualise it I assume it's 6, so if all things are equal it takes 6 times the work to get a PR6 page than it did a PR5 page and 26 times the work for a PR7 page relative to a PR5. All things aren't equal so in reality you can go from a PR0 to a PR6 quite easily with just one link from the right page. But it is helpful to understand how it works.

115 www.google.com
Google - Google does not make use of Boolean logic but it does accept the plus and minus signs (+ -). Google relies on its proprietary "page rank" technology to judge how important a page is based upon the number of pages which link to it. Google also uses the Open Directory Project (DMOZ) for users who prefer a directory style search.
Use synonyms to help focus your search - you are more likely to find what you want. Example:
bee beekeeping hives behive apiary apiarists. (Just use a space to separate your words. Don't use commas or the Boolean AND. Only use the plus sign if a word must appear.

Have you complained to Google? They don't like this kind of thing as they don't want people searching in all innocence to be redirected to porn sites. They'll take it down if you tell them.

Search Engines - Specialized

462 www.leidenuniv.nl/ub/biv/specials.htm
- This is a collection of links to special search engines and searchable directories, which in a number of cases can be used as an alternative for the big search engines like Northern Light, Hotbot, AltaVista, Excite and Infoseek. Most of them are discipline- or subject-specific, others are (collections of) national or regional search engines. They are preceded by a few sites where one may learn to search on the World Wide Web, a collection of synonym dictionaries and thesauri (to find the right search terms), experts to ask questions and the URL's of a number of fee-based services which offer to do the searching for you. Next, under the heading Search engine code texts you'll find the adresses of some sites with pieces of code which you can paste in your own homepages to offer direct access to a number of search engines. Finally I included information about making your own site searchable and a link to a collection of online bookmark managers. (A well organized bookmark file still is one of the best search tools one could have!). See also my Free bibliographies and bibliographic databases on the Web page (Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, General Science). A collection of free journals and magazines on the Web may be found on my Free journals and magazines on the Web page (Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences, General Science). Enjoy!
