Back in 2004 a student Republican organization at Roger Williams University in Bristol, Rhode Island offered a $250 scholarship for whites only. Quickly pledges flowed in and CNN reported that $4,000 had been pledged for the new scholarship.
The scholarship was offered as a protest against all race based scholarships and, interestingly enough, it was organized by Jason Mattera who is of Puerto Rican descent and had himself benefited by a $5,000 grant from the Hispanic College Fund.
The Rhode Island Republican Party criticized the grants as “having racist overtones”.
Critics of affirmative action have also held “bake sales” where blacks were charged 25 cents for a cookie but other races were charged $1.
Unfair? So is affirmative action, organizers contend.
At the University of Washington leftist students who failed to see the irony adopted their usual tactic and physically attacked the anti affirmative action bake sale stall and destroyed it.
One of the cookie rebels had called the police because he feared the discussion – hitherto civil – might turn violent. Unfortunately, rather than step in and arrest the attackers, the police stood by while the University said the peaceful ones had to shut down because they were creating an unsafe environment.
Protests that the “cookie rebels” were peacefully demonstrating while the leftists got violent fell upon deaf ears."
The university allowed a handful of violent students to decide which political views could or could not be expressed on campus. This is called a "heckler's veto"; it is the last resort of those who cannot win an argument through facts or reason.
In the past Bake Sales have been held at the University of California-Irvine, Northwestern University, Southern Methodist University, William and Mary College and Indiana University. Because of threatened or actual violence from the leftists respective universities closed down all the bake sales.
